More than a mask: Possible relationships between lifting of COVID-19 mask requirements and depression symptoms experienced by US adults with disabilities

BackgroundLifting of masking restrictions at key periods during the COVID-19 pandemic may have disproportionately negatively impacted the mental health of individuals with disabilities. ObjectiveThis study examines the prevalence of depression-related symptoms in individuals with and without disabilities preceding and following the US rollback of COVID-19 masking mandates. MethodsPandemic-era data on reported symptoms of depression from the federal Household Pulse Survey from dates surrounding two major announcements on masking relaxations were analyzed. Possible interactions between disability status and type, age grouping, educational attainment, race/Hispanic ethnicity, and sex variables were considered. ResultsFollowing relaxation of major masking restrictions, people with disabilities experienced elevation in depression symptom presence while people without disabilities experienced lessening in these symptoms. Differences between people with and without disabilities were significant. ConclusionsDirect causation between masking mandate relaxations and changes in symptoms of depression cannot be drawn from the available data. However, when considered with greater vulnerabilities to COVID-19 experienced by many individuals with disabilities and dismissive rhetoric surrounding masking decisions, negative feelings arising from mandate changes may have led to elevations in symptoms of depression in people with disabilities in sharp contrast to people without disabilities who may have felt relief. Findings indicate future public health decision making, even in times of crisis, should be undertaken with as much caution as possible regarding and in partnership with populations already at risk.

An e-mental health intervention to reduce depression symptoms in individuals with obesity: study protocol for the randomized, controlled, two-armed, confirmatory LightMood trial

BackgroundPatients with obesity often experience psychological distress, specifically depression symptoms. Due to various barriers, such as limitations of healthcare offers, digital interventions, for example medical apps, can provide a suitable approach to support affected people. In the envisaged prospective randomized controlled trial, we aim to examine the efficacy of the LightMood intervention. The LightMood intervention is a manualized and user-centered, digital intervention for patients with obesity, with a duration of 4 months, which contains elements of cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based and skills-based exercises. We expect the LightMood intervention to be superior to treatment as usual (TAU) in terms of reducing depression symptoms.MethodsThe trial incorporates four distinct measurement time points: the baseline assessment, the post-treatment assessment, and 1- and 3-month follow-up assessments. Furthermore, we implemented in-treatment assessments for both groups. Participants will be randomized into two groups (LightMood intervention vs TAU). The aim is to include 128 participants (64 per group) in the study. Inclusion criteria are patients who are obese, at least 18 years old, with a private Internet access, and with adequate digital literacy and show depression symptoms (PHQ ≥ 10). Exclusion criteria are weekly outpatient individual psychotherapy, obesity surgery within the last year or planned within the next 7 months, no private Internet access, and the prescription of a new psychotropic drug within the last 2 weeks. The primary outcome is the post-assessment reduction in depression symptoms. Secondary outcomes will include the improvement in self-efficacy, quality of life, mindfulness, reduction in eating disorder symptoms, and body mass index (BMI). Furthermore, we expect a positive development of depression symptoms throughout the different time points (T1, T2, and T3) in patients with obesity.DiscussionLightMood is an evidence-based, efficient, low-threshold online intervention that aims to reduce depression symptoms in people with obesity. Online interventions could offer a promising alternative to conventional face-to-face therapy. The primary objective of the current study is to add essential insight into the feasibility, efficacy, effectiveness, and acceptance of e-mental health interventions for people with obesity and depression symptoms.Trial registrationGerman Clinical Trial Register (DRKS), DRKS00029219. The Role of Lurasidone in Managing Depressive Symptoms in People with Schizophrenia: A Review.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder characterized by positive, negative, affective, and cognitive symptoms. Affective symptoms in patients with schizophrenia have traditionally been overlooked or even neglected because they are not considered as fundamental as positive and negative symptoms in the choice of medication. This paper aims to systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of lurasidone in the treatment of depressive symptoms of schizophrenia. Lurasidone appears to be particularly effective on the depressive symptomatology of schizophrenia while also alleviating the positive and negative symptoms associated with the illness. The efficacy of lurasidone in treating patients with first-episode psychosis who present with predominant depressive symptoms suggests that this medication may be a valuable treatment option not only for established cases of schizophrenia but also for individuals in the early stages of the illness. The good tolerability of lurasidone is an important factor that may positively influence treatment decisions.

Investigation of the effect of goal-oriented dance movement therapy on depressive symptoms in people with schizophrenia: a rater-blinded randomised controlled study

Background/Aims Depression is a common symptom in schizophrenia and can negatively affect treatment. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of goal‑oriented dance or movement therapy on depressive symptoms in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. Methods The study was designed as a randomised controlled rater‑blinded study, in which 32 individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia were randomly assigned to either the intervention (dance movement therapy) group or control group. The intervention consisted of twice‑weekly goal‑oriented dance movement therapy sessions, with each session lasting approximately 40–50 minutes, for a total of 8 weeks. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia. Results The depressive symptoms before and after the intervention were compared. No significant differences between groups were observed at baseline. There was no change in the control group, whereas a significant improvement on depressive symptoms was observed in the total Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia score in the dance movement therapy group after the intervention. Conclusions Goal‑oriented dance movement therapy is an effective treatment for the depressive symptoms in schizophrenia patients in addition to conventional treatments. Although the results are favourable, further studies are needed to test its effectiveness. Implications for practice In the traditional treatment of schizophrenia, it is important to evaluate depression and support the treatment with approaches such as dance movement therapy.

The impact of the Mediterranean diet on alleviating depressive symptoms in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

High adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) has been associated with a reduced risk of depression in prospective cohort studies, but whether MD interventions are effective among adults with depression is uncertain. This study aimed to synthesize findings on the effects of MD interventions on the severity of depressive symptoms in adults with depression. PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science were systematically searched from database inception to March 2023. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses guidelines and the Cochrane recommendations were followed. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing outcomes after MD interventions with outcomes for control conditions in adults with depressive disorders or depressive symptoms. Two authors extracted the data independently. The Sidik-Jonkman estimator, the I2 metric, and the prediction interval were used to estimate between-study heterogeneity. To determine the risk of bias and the certainty of evidence from RCTs, we used the Cochrane Collaboration's Risk of Bias 2 and Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation tools, respectively. In total, 1507 participants (mean age range: 22.0 years-53.3 years) with depression were initially included in the 5 RCTs of this review. Compared with control conditions, MD interventions significantly reduced depressive symptoms among young and middle-aged adults with major depression or mild to moderate depressive symptoms (standardized mean difference: -0.53; 95% confidence interval: -0.90 to -0.16; I2 = 87.1%). The prediction interval ranged from -1.86 to 0.81. The overall risk of bias was within the range of "some concerns" to "high," while the certainty of evidence was low. MD interventions appear to have substantial potential for alleviating depressive symptoms in people experiencing major or mild depression. However, to establish robust recommendations, there remains a need for high-quality, large-scale, and long-term RCTs. PROSPERO registration no. CRD42022341895.

Effect of psychosocial interventions for depression in adults with chronic kidney disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BackgroundPeople with chronic kidney disease (CKD) treated with dialysis are frequently affected by depression. Psychotherapy has been reported to decrease depressive symptoms in various chronic diseases and is a potential treatment option for depression. We aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of psychotherapy on depression in adults with CKD.MethodsWe searched MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane for published studies up to October 31, 2023. Two investigators independently reviewed the included studies and extracted relevant data. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the impact of interventions that provide psychological, emotional, or social support without the use of pharmacological substances on depressive symptoms in people with CKD were included and summarized. Scores on different tools for depressive assessment and quality of life were pooled.ResultsA total of 19 RCTs published between 2004 and 2023 were included and analyzed. The weighted mean difference (WMD) for all included studies with regard to depression was − 2.32 (95%CI=-3.83, -0.80, P = 0.003). The WMD for Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) score of depression was − 3.27 (95%CI=-7.81, 1.27, P = 0.158) with significant heterogeneity (I2 = 95.1%). Significant WMD was detected for the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) tool: WMD=-1.90, 95%CI=-2.91, -0.90, P < 0.001. The WMD for all included studies regarding quality of life was 1.21 (95%CI=-0.51, 2.93, P = 0.168). The WMD for Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form (KDQOL-SF) score was 4.55 (95%CI = 0.50, 8.60, P = 0.028). The WMD for SF-36 score was 0.02 (95%CI=-10.33, 10.36, P = 0.998). Significant difference on outcomes of S-PRT scale was observed (WMD = 2.42, 95%CI = 1.07, 3.76, P < 0.001).ConclusionsPsychosocial interventions probably reduce the depression level among CKD patients. Preliminary evidence suggests that psychosocial interventions might be beneficial for the quality of life in CKD patients. Our results provide medical facilities with an evidence-based basis for establishing psychosocial interventions in kidney care settings.

Impact of depression on self-efficacy, illness perceptions and self-management among people with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review of longitudinal studies.

Treating comorbid depression does not always improve outcomes for people with type 2 diabetes. Evidence is lacking on potential psychological and behavioural intermediaries of the impact of depression on diabetes outcomes. To synthesise evidence on the impact of comorbid depression on self-efficacy, illness perceptions, and self-management in people with type 2 diabetes. We searched PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, and Global Health databases from inception up to 29th March 2023. Only prospective studies (cohort or intervention studies) were included, with no restrictions on language. The outcomes were self-efficacy, illness perceptions, and self-management. People with type 2 diabetes in community or health settings. Comorbid depression or depressive symptoms in people with type 2 diabetes. A narrative review of heterogeneous studies. The risk of bias was assessed using the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) quality assessment tool for quantitative studies. Twenty-five studies were included, all from high-income countries. Depression was associated with lower self-efficacy (2 studies), poor illness perception (1 study), and poor self-management practices (17 studies) in people with type 2 diabetes. In 6/7 studies, depressive symptoms predicted less adherence to dietary recommendations, 8/10 studies found depressive symptoms were associated with poor medication adherence, 1/3 study found that depressive symptoms were associated with poor weight control, 3/4 with less physical exercise, and 2/3 with general self-care practices. There were no studies from low- and middle-income countries and non-Western settings, and we cannot assume the mechanisms linking comorbid depression with diabetes outcomes are similar. Comorbid depression was associated with lower self-efficacy, poorer self-management, and less adaptive illness perceptions among people with diabetes.

Information Needs and Its Association With Depressive Symptoms in People With Type 2 Diabetes.

The purpose of this study was to describe the information needs and examine its association with depressive symptoms in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). A descriptive, correlational design was used. People with T2D (N = 358) were recruited from 12 communities in Shanghai, China. Self-reported information needs and depressive symptoms were measured using the Information Needs in Diabetes Questionnaire and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), respectively. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed. The participants were 64.8 years on average, and 46.6% were men. One hundred fifty-one (42.2%) had depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 ≥ 5). Participants had the least knowledge about "diabetes research," "acute complications," and "lifestyle adjustment." The sample had the highest levels of information needs about topics including "mental strain," "treatment/therapy," and "diabetes in everyday life." Compared to those without depressive symptoms, those experiencing depressive symptoms were less informed and had higher levels of need for further information. Controlling for covariates, higher levels of need for further information were significantly associated with greater depressive symptoms (B = 0.368, 95% CI, 0.155-0.582, P = .001). This study demonstrated areas that should be prioritized when meeting patients' information needs. It also showed the potential negative effect of unmet information needs on depression. These findings may help develop a more tailored intervention for people with T2D.

The effect of a low-calorie diet on depressive symptoms in individuals with overweight or obesity: a systematic review and meta-analysis of interventional studies

Abstract Background Individuals with overweight or obesity are at a high risk for so-called ‘atypical’ or immunometabolic depression, with associated neurovegetative symptoms including overeating, fatigue, weight gain, and a poor metabolic profile evidenced e.g. by dyslipidemia or hyperglycemia. Research has generated preliminary evidence for a low-calorie diet (LCD) in reducing depressive symptoms. The aim of the current systematic review and meta-analysis is to examine this evidence to determine whether a LCD reduces depressive symptoms in people with overweight or obesity. Methods Eligible studies were identified through PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and PsycINFO until August 2023. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) were derived using random-effects meta-analyses for (1) pre-post LCD comparisons of depression outcomes, and (2) LCD v. no-diet-control group comparisons of depression outcomes. Results A total of 25 studies were included in the pre-post meta-analysis, finding that depression scores were significantly lower following a LCD (SMD = −0.47), which was not significantly moderated by the addition of exercise or behavioral therapy as a non-diet adjunct. Meta-regressions indicated that a higher baseline BMI and greater weight reduction were associated with a greater reduction in depression scores. The intervention-control meta-analysis (n = 4) found that overweight or obese participants adhering to a LCD showed a nominally lower depression score compared with those given no intervention (SMD = −0.29). Conclusions There is evidence that LCDs may reduce depressive symptoms in people with overweight or obesity in the short term. Future well-controlled intervention studies, including a non-active control group, and longer-term follow-ups, are warranted in order to make more definitive conclusions.

Impact of a free medication intervention on seizure recurrence and anxious and depressive symptoms in people living with epilepsy in the Republic of Guinea.

Of ~5 million people living with epilepsy (PLWE) in Sub-Saharan Africa, roughly one-third experience depression and over one third experience anxiety. In Guinea, these issues may be compounded by fewer available resources, such as appropriate anti-seizure medications (ASMs). We aim to quantify seizure frequency, anxiety and depression in PLWE in Guinea, before and after a free ASM intervention and neurologist's consultation. Guinean participants >12 years old with ≥2 unprovoked seizure were prospectively recruited. As part of a broader interview, participants reported prior 30-day seizure frequency and screened for depression (PHQ-9) (range 0-27 points) and anxiety (GAD-7) (range 0-21 points) with re-evaluation at 90 days. Of 148 participants enrolled (mean age = 27.3 years, range 12-72; 45% female), 62% were currently taking ASMs. For the 30 days pre-enrolment, average seizure frequency was 3.2 (95%CI 2.3, 4.2); 28% of participants were seizure-free. ASM regimens were modified for 95% of participants, mostly initiating levetiracetam (n = 115, 80% of modifications). 90-day study retention was 76% (n = 113) among whom 87% reported full adherence to the ASM. After 90 days, the average seizure frequency over the prior 30 days was 1.5 (95%CI 0.5, 2.6), significantly lower than at baseline (p = 0.002). 66% were seizure-free. At baseline, average PHQ-9 score was 21.2 (95%CI [20.2, 22.2]), indicating severe depressive symptoms. Average GAD-7 score was 16.5 [15.6, 17.4], indicating severe anxious symptoms. At 90-days, average PHQ-9 score was 17.5[16.4, 18.5] and significantly lower than baseline (p < 0.001). Average GAD-7 score was 14.4 [13.6, 15.3] and significantly lower than baseline (p = 0.002). Seizure frequency was not correlated with PHQ-9 nor GAD-7 scores at baseline but was at 90 days for both PHQ-9 (r = 0.24, p = 0.01) and GAD-7 (r = 0.22, p = 0.02) scores. The prevalence of suicidal ideation dropped from 67% to 47% of participants (p = 0.004). ASM management has dual importance for PLWE in resource-limited settings, improving both seizure control and mental health.

Effects of Lockdown Restrictions and Impact of Anxiety and Depression Symptoms in People With Chronic Pain During the Covid-19 Pandemic: A 13-Wave Longitudinal Study

In early 2020, countries across the world imposed lockdown restrictions to curb the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus. Lockdown conditions, including social and physical distancing measures and recommended self-isolation for clinically vulnerable groups, were proposed to disproportionately affect those living with chronic pain, who already report reduced access to social support and increased isolation. Yet, empirical evidence from longitudinal studies tracking the effects of prolonged and fluctuating lockdown conditions, and potential psychological factors mediating the effects of such restrictions on outcomes in chronic pain populations, is lacking. Accordingly, in the present 13-wave longitudinal study, we surveyed pain intensity, pain interference, and tiredness in people with chronic pain over the course of 11 months of the Covid-19 pandemic (April 2020–March 2021). Of N = 431 participants at baseline, average completion rate was ∼50% of time points, and all available data points were included in linear mixed models. We examined the impact of varying levels of lockdown restrictions on these outcomes and investigated whether psychological distress levels mediated effects. We found that a full national lockdown was related to greater pain intensity, and these effects were partially mediated by depressive symptoms. No effects of lockdown level were found for pain interference and tiredness, which were instead predicted by higher levels of depression, anxiety, pain catastrophising, and reduced exercise. Our findings are relevant for improving patient care in current and future crises. Offering remote management options for low mood could be particularly beneficial for this vulnerable population in the event of future implementation of lockdown restrictions. PerspectiveThis longitudinal study demonstrates the impact of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions on people with chronic pain. Findings suggest a complex interaction of psychosocial factors that impacted various aspects of pain experience in patients, which offer the potential to inform clinical strategies for remote medicine and future crises.

Depression severity mediates stigma and quality of life in clinically stable people with schizophrenia in rural China

BackgroundDepressive symptoms associated with schizophrenia are closely related to stigma and quality of life(QOL). There is, however, no thorough research on the connection between the three. This study sought to investigate the possible factors influencing depressive symptoms in people with schizophrenia (PWS) in rural Chaohu, China, and to further explore the role of depression severity in stigma and lifestyle quality.MethodsEight hundred twenty-one schizophrenia patients accomplished the entire scale, including the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), the Social Impact Scale (SIS), and the World Health Organization on Quality of Life Brief Scale(WHOQOL—BREF). A straightforward mediation model was employed to determine if the intensity of the depression could act as a mediator between stigma and QOL.ResultsTwo hundred seventy-nine schizophrenia patients (34%) had depressive symptoms (PHQ ≥ 10), and 542 patients (66%) did not (PHQ < 10). Logistic regression showed that marital status, job status, physical exercise, standard of living, and stigma contributed to the depressed symptoms of schizophrenia. Depression severity partially mediated the effect between stigma and QOL, with a mediating effect of 48.3%.ConclusionsThis study discovered a significant incidence of depressed symptoms associated with schizophrenia, with depression severity serving as a mediator variable connecting stigma and QOL and partially moderating the association.

Efficacy of the Transdiagnostic Intervention for Sleep and Circadian Dysfunction for Depression Symptoms and Sleep-Wake Disruption in Older and Younger Adults: Secondary Age-Stratified Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial

ObjectivePerform a secondary analysis examining the efficacy of the Transdiagnostic Intervention for Sleep and Circadian Dysfunction (TranS-C) for depression symptom responses, and explore changes in potential target mechanisms. DesignSecondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial with convenience age subsamples (younger (20–49 year; n = 52) versus and older (50–71 years; n = 35)). SettingCommunity mental health clinics. ParticipantsEighty-seven adults with serious mental illness. InterventionTranS-C versus treatment as usual (TAU). MeasurementsOutcomes were depression symptoms (Quick Inventory of Depression Symptoms), insomnia symptoms (Insomnia Severity Index), and objective sleep-wake rhythm measures (interdaily stability and relative amplitude). ResultsDepression response rates (≥50% symptom reductions) were higher in the TranS-C (35.0%) than the TAU (8.8%) group 6-months postintervention (χ2 = 10.3, p = 0.001). There was a medium effect of TranS-C versus TAU on depression symptoms 6-months postintervention (Cohen's d = −0.40, 95% confidence interval (CI): −0.81, 0.01). In both age groups, there were large treatment effects on insomnia symptoms post-treatment (Cohen's d >0.90). In the older subsample, there were additionally medium treatment effects on post-treatment interdaily stability (Cohen's d = 0.60, 95% CI: −0.11, 1.61). Post-treatment reductions in insomnia symptoms correlated with depression symptom reduction 6-months later in the younger subsample (Spearman rho = 0.59, n = 20, p = 0.008). In older adults, postintervention increases in interdaily stability correlated with depression symptom reductions 6-months later (Spearman rho = −0.52, n = 15, p = 0.049). ConclusionConfirmatory trials are needed, given the low age-specific sample sizes here, to determine if TranS -C's produces durable depression responses by increasing sleep-wake rhythm stability in older adults and improving insomnia symptoms in younger adults. Brief article summaryThe authors evaluated preliminary efficacy of a behavioral intervention that targets sleep/sleep-wake rhythms, the Transdiagnostic Intervention for Sleep and Circadian Dysfunction (TranS-C), for depression symptoms in people with serious mental illness. TranS-C was associated with higher depression response rates than treatment as usual 6-months postintervention. The degree of depression symptom response 6-months later was related to the degree of treatment phase improvements in interdaily stability (in older adults) and reduction in insomnia severity (in younger adults).A pragmatic nonpharmacologic intervention, the Transdiagnostic Intervention for Sleep and Circadian Dysfunction, has preliminary efficacy for improving sleep-wake factors and depression symptoms.

Efficacy of remote exercise and physiotherapy programs on depressive symptoms in people with multiple sclerosis - A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The prevalence of depression in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is common and negatively affects the quality of life of patients. The studies of the effect of remote forms of treatment conclude that it is a fairly easy process to carry out and with very good results for patients. Thus, the purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to investigate randomized controlled trials on the effectiveness of remote forms of exercise and physiotherapy on the depressive symptoms of people with MS. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, PsychInfo, SportDiscus, Web of Science and ResearchGate databases. The keywords for the search were: telerehabilitation, telecounseling, tele, telephone, physiotherapy, physical therapy, rehabilitation, therapeutic exercise, exercise, depression, depressive disorders, multiple sclerosis and MS. In addition, some inclusion and exclusion criteria were defined for the selection of the final studies, which were also evaluated with the PEDro scale for their quality. Among the initial 176 studies found, 6 were included in the systematic review. The development of a remote individualized exercise program based on assessment, personal goals and daily life of the patient, as well as a program based on motor imagery training, showed beneficial effects on depression in people with MS, which are considered possibly equivalent to those of in-person intervention. Μeta-analysis revealed that remote exercise and physiotherapy programs are significantly more effective than control group interventions for the management of depression in people with MS (random effects model, Hedges' g=-0.41, 95%CI=-0.74,-0.09, SE=0.17, p=0.01). The sub-group analysis showed that studies that had chosen not to have their control group carry out any form of intervention had more significant outcomes than the others. Through telephone communication or other electronic monitoring systems, can be achieved an effective treatment of people with depression and MS, based on exercise and physiotherapy. However, more studies are deemed necessary to find the most appropriately designed and therapeutic forms of remote intervention.

Association between albumin and depression: a population-based study

IntroductionAlbumin is the most prevalent plasma protein and is involved in a variety of critical physiological processes. Low serum albumin levels have been linked to depression symptoms in people who had recent suicide attempts and those suffering from several mental diseases such as acute episodes of mania, and schizophrenia. However, there has been little investigation into the relationship between depression and serum albumin levels in community-dwelling persons. This research aimed to examine the relationship between serum albumin and depression in a population-based sample and whether it differs depending on other possible confounders.MethodsOur data were derived from a national household population study conducted in 2017 with a sample size of 3,521 Jordanians aged > 17 years old. The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) scale, a self-administered scale, was used to screen for depression. Concentrations of serum albumin and other medical biomarkers were measured by blood tests. Using descriptive statistics for depression distribution and multivariate logistic regression analysis, the connection between albumin levels and depression was investigated.ResultsThe odds ratios (ORs) for depression were significantly lower in the third and fourth quartiles of serum albumin concentration compared to the first quartile (OR = 0.64 and 0.66, respectively; P values = <0.001 and <0.001, respectively). This association was statistically significant even after controlling for variables such as gender, age, marital status, education, and occupation (OR = 0.67 and 0.75, respectively, and P values = 0.001 and 0.02, respectively), as well as after further controlling for other health status variables such as nutrition, comorbidity, body mass index, somking status, and biomedical markers such as serum calcium, phosphate, and magnesium (OR = 0.58 and 0.59, respectively, and P values = <0.001 and 0.001, respectively). Moreover, the unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios in the three regression models declined linearly with rising quartiles of serum albumin (P trend = <0.001, 0.009, and 0.001, respectively).ConclusionsOur research found an inverse relationship between serum albumin and depression. Serum albumin could be a warning measure for depression. It is required for appropriate intervention measures to be implemented.

Determinants of Depressive Symptoms in People Living with HIV in the Case of Low-Resource Communities in Eastern Ethiopia: A Multi-Centered Study

Introduction: Depression in people living with HIV (PLHIV) has become an urgent issue. The HIV/AIDS pandemic cannot end without addressing the mental health of PLHIV through integrated approaches; besides, depression in PLHIV might be unrecognized and undertreated, whereas some manifestations of HIV and depression are mirrored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess depressive symptoms and associated factors in PLHIV in Eastern Ethiopia to further interventions. Methods: 420 PLHIV participated in this cross-sectional study and completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Medical record reviews and pretested, structured face-to-face interviews were used to collect the data. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to examine the odds ratios for the existence of depressive symptoms, including sociodemographic information, and comorbidities as relevant variables. Statistically significant variables were determined using P values of 0.05. Results: We found over all prevalence of depressive symptoms in PLHIV was 52.4% (95% CI = 47.6–57.1). Employment status [AOR = 0.22 (95% CI = 0.13-0.36)], recent CD4 count [AOR = 6.99 (95% CI = 2.81-17.38)], duration on ART [AOR = 5.05 (95% CI = 2.38-10.74)], and chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) [AOR = 7.90 (95% CI = 4.21-14.85)] were significantly associated with depressive symptoms among PLHIV on treatment. Conclusion: In this study, almost half of adult PLHIV receiving ART drugs had depressive symptoms. Employment was found to be preventive, while low CD4 counts, starting ART drugs recently, and the presence of chronic NCDs increased the risk of developing depression. Mental health screening and NCD intervention packages should be integrated into and offered at HIV care clinics.

Reduction in Depressive Symptoms in People who Inject Drugs who Are Cured of Hepatitis C Virus Infection: The HERO Study.

Depressive symptoms are prevalent among people who inject drugs (PWID) and people with hepatitis C virus (HCV). We examined changes in depressive symptoms among HCV-infected PWID following direct-acting antiviral treatments to evaluate whether these changes differed by history of depressive symptoms, substance use, or HCV treatment outcome. We conducted a secondary analysis of the HERO Study (NCT02824640), a pragmatic randomized clinical trial among PWID, to test the effectiveness of HCV care models. Depressive symptoms (primary outcome) were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) at baseline, end of treatment (EOT), and at follow-up 12 and 24 weeks after EOT. Sustained virologic response (SVR) was defined as undetectable HCV RNA at ≥12 weeks following EOT. Baseline drug use was defined as having a positive urine screening test for amphetamine, methamphetamine, benzodiazepine, cocaine, cannabis, opiate, or oxycodone. The sample (n = 498) was 72.3% male, 64.2% White, and on average 43.9 years old. In patients who achieved SVR (F(3432) = 4.58; P = .004) and those with drug use at baseline (F(3478) = 5.11; P < .01), PHQ-9 scores significantly declined over time, with scores lower at EOT and both follow-ups as compared with baseline. Mean PHQ-9 scores at EOT and follow-ups were significantly lower than at baseline, except for those with no depression or mild depression at baseline. This study showed that HCV treatment in PWID is associated with sustained declines in depression up to 24 weeks post-treatment among those who achieve SVR and that drug use does not interfere with improvement in depressive symptoms.

Nonpharmacological approaches for pain and symptoms of depression in people with osteoarthritis: systematic review and meta-analyses

People with osteoarthritis often experience pain and depression. These meta-analyses examined and compared nonpharmacological randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for pain and symptoms of depression in people living with osteoarthritis. RCTs published up until April 2022 were sourced by searching electronic databases EMBASE, PUBMED & MEDLINE, Web of Science, CINAHL and PEDro. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed to calculate pooled effect sizes (ES) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for pain and depression. Subgroup analyses examined intervention subtypes. For pain, 29 interventions (n = 4382; 65 ± 6.9 years; 70% female), revealed a significant effect on reducing pain (ES = 0.43, 95% CI [0.25, 0.61], p < 0.001). Effect sizes were significant (p < 0.001) for movement meditation (ES = 0.52; 95% CI [0.35, 0.69]), multimodal approaches (ES = 0.37; 95% CI [0.22, 0.51]), and psychological therapy (ES = 0.21; 95% CI [0.11, 0.31]), and significant (p = 0.046) for resistance exercise (ES = 0.43, 95% CI [− 0.07, 0.94]. Aerobic exercise alone did not improve pain. For depression, 28 interventions (n = 3377; 63 ± 7.0 years; 69% female), revealed a significant effect on reducing depressive symptoms (ES = 0.29, 95% CI [0.08, 0.49], p < 0.001). Effect sizes were significant for movement meditation (ES = 0.30; 95% CI [0.06, 0.55], p = 0.008) and multimodal interventions (ES = 0.12; 95% CI [0.07, 0.18], p < 0.001). Resistance/aerobic exercise or therapy alone did not improve depressive symptoms. Mind–body approaches were more effective than aerobic/resistance exercise or therapy alone for reducing pain and depression in people with osteoarthritis.Systematic review registration: PROSPERO CRD42022338051.

Predictors of depressive symptoms among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Indonesia: a cross-sectional study

Working conditions and quality of work life reflect a person’s overall quality of life and well study to date has investigated the factors contributing to depressive symptoms in people with type 2 DM in Indonesia. This study aimed to investigate the predictors of depressive symptoms among people with type 2 DM in Indonesia. This was a cross‐sectional study using secondary data from the Indonesian family life survey 5 (IFLS-5). A total of 774 respondents with type 2 DM were selected for this study. The dependent variable was depressive symptoms while the independent variables were demographics, economic status, smoking, duration of diabetes, chronic conditions, self-rated health, and physical function. The center for epidemiologic studies depression scale was used to measure depressive symptoms. The data were analyzed with multivariate logistic regression. The results showed that 70.70% of respondents had depressive symptoms. The risk of experiencing depressive symptoms decreased with age ≥ 50 years (AOR= 0.40; 95%CI 0.25 to 0.64; p&lt;0.001) and good self-rated health (AOR= 0.54; 95%CI= 0.35 to 0.81; p= 0.003). Otherwise, the risk of experiencing depressive symptoms increased with a higher level of education (AOR= 1.78; 95%CI= 1.02 to 3.12; p= 0.042) and with chronic conditions (AOR= 1.64; 95%CI= 1.07 to 2.51; p= 0.023). Depressive symptoms were significantly associated with personal health conditions including older age, level of education, self-rated health and chronic conditions. Individual and community level strategies that can improve personal health conditions can be further studied to address depressive symptoms in type 2 DM patients.

Effects of cranial electrotherapy stimulation on improving depressive symptoms in people with stress: A randomized, double-blind controlled study

BackgroundCranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is a form of neurostimulation that delivers alternating microcurrent via electrodes on the head. We investigated the effectiveness of CES in reducing stress. MethodsParticipants who experienced subjective stress combined with subclinical depression or insomnia were recruited based on interviews and questionnaires. The subjects were randomly assigned to the active CES or sham groups and asked to use the device for 30 min twice a day for three weeks. Psychological rating scales, quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG), and serial salivary cortisol levels were measured before and after the intervention. ResultsSixty-two participants (58 females, mean age = 47.3 ± 8.2 years) completed the trial. After intervention, the depression scores improved significantly to a nearly normal level (Beck depression inventory-II, 31.3 ± 11.6 to 10.8 ± 7.2, p < 0.001) in the CES group, which were greater improvement compared to the sham group (p = 0.020). There were significant group-by-visit interactions in absolute delta power in the temporal area (p = 0.033), and theta (p = 0.038), beta (p = 0.048), and high beta power (p = 0.048) in the parietal area. CES led to a flattening of the cortisol slope (p = 0.011) and an increase in bedtime cortisol (p = 0.036) compared to the sham group. LimitationsBias may have been introduced during the process because device use and sample collection were self-conducted by participants at home. ConclusionsCES can alleviate depressive symptoms and stress response, showing a potential as an adjunctive therapy for stress.
